Embarkation day on Disney Cruise Line is where the vacation truly begins. In this step-by-step guide, I’m walking you through exactly what to expect, from arriving at the port to that unforgettable moment your family is announced on board.
If you’ve booked a Disney Cruise—or you’re thinking about it—embarkation day is where the magic officially begins… and also where a lot of people feel a little unsure.
Where do you go? What should you pack in your carry-on? Will your kids melt down before you even step onboard?
Hi, I’m Rose Woolsey, Travel Advisor and owner of Where To Go Travel Co—and I’m walking you through exactly what embarkation day looks like on Disney Cruise Line, from boarding the DCL shuttle to that goosebumps moment when your family is announced on the ship.
You’ll learn what to expect, what not to stress about, and a few pro tips I always share with my clients to make the first day of your cruise as smooth and magical as possible.
If you’re staying at a Disney resort or a partner hotel, the Disney Cruise Line motorcoach makes it super easy. It’s comfortable, the kids will love the Disney music and videos onboard, and best of all, you don’t have to think about a thing.
That said, depending on your flight time or hotel location, I sometimes recommend private transportation instead, especially if we want a little more flexibility.
If you’re taking the Disney motorcoach, the only time you need to pay attention to is when to meet the bus. Easy.
But if you’re arriving by private transfer or driving yourself, you’ll want to stick closely to the Port Arrival Time you were assigned during online check-in.
And yes, they do stick to it. If you show up at the port a few hours early, you will be waiting. You won’t be allowed to board until your scheduled time.
If you’re staying at a Disney resort or a partner hotel and taking the Disney Cruise Line motorcoach, your luggage will be picked up right from your hotel room that morning, and you won’t see it again until it magically appears in your cruise stateroom later that day.
Now, if you’re taking a private transfer or driving yourself to the port, you’ll hand over your luggage when you arrive at the terminal. Either way, before you hand it off to anyone, make sure you’ve removed any old airline tags and attached the Disney Cruise Line luggage tags that were mailed to you. That helps your bags get to the right place on board.
Next up: check-in. You’ll head into the terminal, and this is where having your Navigator App downloaded ahead of time is a huge help. You’ll show your port arrival form, your passports, and any other required documents. Then they’ll give you a boarding group.
Security is quick and painless, think airport-style but way less stressful. And then you’re in the terminal, possibly catching your first glimpse of the ship through those big windows. That’s when it really hits you: it’s happening.
Once your boarding group is called, it’s go time! You’ll head through the terminal and onto the gangway, and this is when it all starts to feel very real.
Right as you enter the ship, a Cast Member will ask for your family’s last name. And then they’ll announce you as you walk into the atrium:
“Please welcome aboard the Woolsey family!”
It’s such a fun moment—music is playing, people are clapping, and you’re officially on your Disney Cruise.
Even if your kids don’t totally get what’s happening yet, trust me: you will. I still get chills every time I hear it. It’s the perfect way to kick off your cruise.
Once you’re on the ship, you are officially on vacation.
Most people head straight to lunch—and most people head to the buffet. That’s Cabanas or Marceline Market, depending on your ship. But just know: there are other options. The quick-service spots near the pool are usually open, and there’s often a sit-down restaurant open just for embarkation day.
The sit-down option is usually quieter, and if your family isn’t into crowds, it’s a great choice.
Staterooms typically aren’t ready until around 1:30 or 2:00 PM, so if you’ve boarded earlier in the day, be sure to bring a small day bag with anything you might need—swimsuits, sunscreen, medications, maybe a change of clothes for the kids. Your luggage can arrive as late as 5 PM, so plan for that just in case.
The afternoon is the perfect time to:
You don’t have to do everything, but if you’ve got a few things on your wish list, this is a great window to check them out while the ship is still fairly quiet.

Before the ship can leave, everyone has to complete a mandatory safety check-in called the muster drill. It’s simple, but important.
You’ll be assigned a muster station, which is basically your emergency meeting location. You can find it in the Navigator App and printed on your Key to the World card—usually a letter and number combo like “D4.”
When it’s time, just head to that location and check in with a Cast Member. Then stay put and listen to the short safety briefing. It doesn’t take long, but don’t be late—they can’t start until everyone has arrived, so showing up on time keeps things moving for everyone.
Once the safety check is complete, it’s time to celebrate!
Head up to the pool deck for the Sail Away Party, which is high-energy, full of music, dancing, and characters. Mickey and friends come out, the countdown begins, and the energy is just contagious. Kids love it, grown-ups love it—it’s the official kickoff to your cruise and absolutely worth being there for.
Then, find a good spot to watch the ship sail away from port. Whether you’re on deck, on your balcony, or even sitting by the window with a drink in hand, that moment when you glide away from shore? It’s pure magic.
Once the ship has officially set sail, the evening really starts to unfold.
First up: dinner.
You’ll find your assigned dining time and restaurant rotation in the Navigator App, and it’s also printed on your Key to the World card. Disney Cruise Line uses rotational dining, which means you’ll move between three different restaurants throughout your cruise—but your serving team stays with you every night. It’s one of my favorite parts of the experience.
If you’re scheduled for the second seating, you may want to grab a snack earlier in the afternoon so little ones aren’t starving by 8 p.m.

At this point in the day, your Navigator App will be fully updated with that day’s activities, showtimes, character greetings, and more. It’s your go-to guide for everything happening onboard.
And if there’s a stage show that night, don’t miss it. Disney does the stage shows so well. It’s a fantastic way to end your first day at sea.

If the idea of planning all of this still feels a little overwhelming—or if you’re thinking, “Wow, there’s a lot to remember”—you don’t have to figure it out on your own.
